Why must calcium levels be corrected for albumin?
Roughly half of serum calcium is bound to albumin. If albumin levels are low (hypoalbuminemia), the total calcium measurement will appear artificially low, even though the active, ionized calcium is normal.
What is the clinical formula used?
The standard formula is: Corrected Calcium (mg/dL) = Measured Total Calcium (mg/dL) + 0.8 * (4.0 - Patient's Albumin (g/dL)).
What is a normal albumin level?
A standard normal reference value for albumin is 4.0 g/dL. If the patient's albumin is 4.0 or higher, no correction is clinically necessary.
